Customer Success Story: The View Hospital Integrates Health Insights HIS with SAP S/4HANA for Finance and Supply Chain
Overview
The View Hospital in Doha, Qatar is part of Elegancia Healthcare now Apex Healthcare, the healthcare cluster of Apex Group within the Qatar-based PIH group. Patient activity — registration, billing, deposits, receipts and pharmacy dispensing — runs in the Health Insights hospital information system, while finance, controlling and materials management run on a single SAP S/4HANA installation shared across the group. DigiMed Technologies designed and delivered the integration that connected the two systems via a two-way interface covering the full patient revenue lifecycle and the full inventory lifecycle, configured on HIS and S/4HANA instance for the cluster’s facilities.

The View Hospital now runs patient billing and pharmacy in Health Insights and finance and supply chain in SAP S/4HANA as one connected process. Revenue, cash and stock are recorded once and flow automatically between the two systems, giving finance an accurate daily position, management a clear view of profitability, and the group an integration model that extends to every facility in the cluster.

DigiMed Technologies designed and delivered the integration that connected the two systems via a two-way interface covering the full patient revenue lifecycle and the full inventory lifecycle, configured on HIS and S/4HANA instance for the cluster’s facilities.
The Challenge
- Revenue recorded twice: Invoices, discounts, credit notes, deposits and receipts were created in the HIS and then had to be reflected in SAP finance, turning every billing event into a second piece of accounting work.
- A complex revenue lifecycle: Hospital billing is not a single invoice. Interim and final bills, post-invoice discounts, write-offs, patient advances, lump-sum insurance remittances, refunds, allocations and their cancellations all have to land correctly in the ledger — and each reversal has to undo exactly what its original did.
- Limited profitability visibility: Without service-level detail flowing into SAP, revenue could not be analysed reliably by facility, payer or service line.
- Unbilled inpatient activity: Services delivered to patients still in hospital at month-end were not reflected in the accounts until discharge billing, understating period revenue.
- Two views of stock: Materials were procured and received in SAP but dispensed and consumed in the HIS, so pharmacy and ward stock in one system rarely matched the other.
- Multiple facilities, one platform: The solution had to serve several facilities with separate company codes from a single HIS and a single S/4HANA installation, without building a separate integration for each.
The Solution
- Complete patient revenue integration: Every financial transaction originating in the HIS is interfaced to SAP — invoices, credit notes, discounts, bad debt and write-off adjustments, patient and payer deposits, refunds, receipts, allocations and main cashier clearing — together with a matching cancellation or reversal for each, so the ledger always mirrors the hospital’s billing position.
- Posting to finance and profitability analysis: Each invoice line posts its base price, discount and tax to the relevant general ledger accounts and to profitability analysis, carrying the hospital, payer, invoice and patient bill references needed to analyse revenue by facility, payer and service.
- Deposits and remittances handled properly: Patient advances and lump-sum insurance remittances are posted as deposits and later allocated against invoices at bill level, so unapplied cash and open receivables remain visible and correct in SAP.
- Month-end inpatient accrual: Services delivered but not yet billed for current inpatients are summarised by category and accrued automatically on the last day of each month, then reversed on the first day of the next — bringing work-in-progress revenue into the correct period.
- Controlled nightly processing: Transactions are captured in staging tables throughout the day and posted to SAP in a scheduled overnight run, giving finance a complete, predictable daily position without loading the HIS during clinical hours.
- Two-way supply chain integration: SAP sends the material master and every stock receipt and return to the HIS, keeping pharmacy and consumables catalogues and quantities aligned. The HIS sends back transfers, issues, issue returns, departmental consumption, patient dispensing at batch level — including components used in admixtures — and patient returns.
- Clean cutover of opening stock: Before go-live, SAP transmitted the quantity of every item in every stock location to the HIS as a stock increase, giving both systems an identical, traceable starting balance.
- One design, several facilities: The integration was built once on the single HIS and single S/4HANA instance, with each facility configured under its own company code, so additional facilities are onboarded through configuration rather than new interfaces.
Benefits Achieved
- No double entry: Patient financial transactions and stock movements are recorded once, at source, and reach SAP automatically.
- A ledger that matches the hospital: Every billing event and every cancellation is reflected in finance, so receivables, deposits and unapplied cash in SAP agree with the HIS.
- Revenue visible by facility and payer: Line-level postings into profitability analysis give management a reliable view of revenue by hospital, payer and service.
- Accurate period reporting: Automated month-end accrual of inpatient work in progress places revenue in the period in which care was delivered.
- One version of stock: Pharmacy and consumable balances stay aligned between SAP and the HIS, with consumption and patient dispensing captured as they happen.
- Faster, simpler close: With transactions posted daily and cancellations handled automatically, month-end becomes a review of already-posted data rather than a reconciliation exercise.
- Ready for growth: New facilities join the cluster’s integration through configuration on the same platform rather than a new project.
