Alameda Group Completes SAP BW Migration from Oracle to HANA DB.

Overview
As part of its ongoing SAP modernization roadmap — which has already seen its ERP landscape consolidated and migrated to SAP HANA — Alameda Group engaged DigiMed to migrate its SAP Business Warehouse (BW) from Oracle to SAP HANA DB, completing the group's transition to a single strategic database platform.

The Challenge

The Oracle-based BW had become a bottleneck for group-wide reporting:
  • Long data loads: Nightly load chains from the hospital systems ran for hours and increasingly collided with the online reporting day.
  • Slow queries: Heavy management reports across multiple facilities and years of history took minutes to render, discouraging self-service use.
  • Growing volumes: Clinical and financial data volumes across the group's hospitals kept growing, stretching the platform further.
  • Split platforms: With ERP already on HANA, keeping BW on Oracle meant maintaining two database skill sets and support contracts.

The Solution
DigiMed executed the migration with SAP's standard tools and a BW-specific optimization pass:

  • Housekeeping first:
Obsolete data, unused objects and aged PSA/changelog content were cleaned up, shrinking the database ahead of migration.
  • DMO migration:
The migration ran via SUM/DMO in a controlled window, rehearsed end-to-end on a production copy.
  • HANA-optimized objects:
Key InfoCubes and DSOs were converted to HANA-optimized forms and critical query paths were tuned.
  • Load chain re-sequencing:
Process chains were rebuilt to exploit HANA's load performance and shorten the nightly window.

Benefits Achieved

  • Loads in minutes:
Nightly load chains that previously ran for several hours now complete in under an hour.
  • Instant reporting:
Management queries render faster, making true self-service reporting practical for finance and operations teams.
  • One platform:
A single HANA-based landscape for ERP and BW simplifies administration, backup and disaster recovery.
  • Analytics-ready:
The HANA-based BW now feeds SAP Analytics Cloud dashboards with live, trusted data.
Conclusion
The BW migration completes Alameda Group's database modernization journey — every SAP workload now runs on HANA, reporting is dramatically faster, and the foundation is in place for the group's expanding analytics agenda.
